Terms Starting with the Letter “S”

SAE: The acronym of Society of Automotive Engineers. This is a non-profit undependent instution that makes standardizations of industrial and automotive applications in the US.

Safety: The situation of minimum danger for human health or property damage.

Safety factor: Factor of safety is the design consideration in mechanical design applications where the failure stress of material is divided with this. And the design calculations are made according to this new stress value. So, more failure safety obtained.

Safety policy: In a company, safety policies are the documents that declares the commitment to safety standards.

Safety legislation: In a country, they are the laws and constitutions on human health and safety on different kinds of occupations.

Safety valve: They are the types of valves that designed to releive the excess pressure for safety.

Saturated air: Saturated air is the air that holds the maximum level of moisture inside it in a given temperature and pressure.

Saybolt universal seconds: This is a standard test that measures the time that see the vicosity of the fluids.

Schedule ANSI: They are the American National Standards Institute that schedules the standard pipe sizes in hydraulic and pneumatic applications.

Screw compressor: They are the types of compressors that pressurizing air action takes place with the action of two meshed screws. Once the screws are rotating, the air pressure incresases in the air reservior.

Seal: Mechanical applications and elements that we use in the water or air tight applications.

Self priming pump: A type of centrfugal pump that use air-water mixture to reach the highest potential primed pumping condition. In sewage applications, the use of the self primin pumps are very common.

Separator: Systems or machines that separates the elements of constituents of a machine or device.

Sequence valve: Types of valves that pressure-operated, normally closed, poppet or spool valve that opens at an adjustable set pressure.

Servo valve: They are types of valves in hydraulic systems to control the hydraulic cylinders with control system signals.

Setpoint: The point that the output result of a control system get stabilize.

Shuttle valve: Shuttle valves are types of vaşves that allows the diffferent sources of pressure into the system.

SI units: Internation system of units that contries adhere which have 7 basic units; meter, seconds, mole, ampere, kelvin, candela and kilogram. All the sub-units are composed of tehse units are the SI units.

Side loads: Transferring software from a device to an other local device.

Sieve number: The number that shows the size of a sieve.

Silicon seal: Sealing equipments in made from silicon materials.

Single action cylinder: They are the cylinders which the working fluid comes only one side of the cylinder. Internal combustion engines are the important examples.

Slippage: The action of slipping because of the lubricity.

Snubber restriction: In electrical and electronic systems they are the devices that limits the voltage transients.

Solenoid tester: They are the devices or multimeters that tests the voltage difference in the solenoids of valves.

Solenoid valve: They are the valves that take action with the application of voltage from an electronic circuit. The are very common in the hydraulic systems.

Speed control: Electronic systems in mechanical devices to control the speeds in the intended levels.

Speed of a cylinder: The total reciprocating cycles of a cylinder in specific time.

Spool valve: They are the types of valves that opens and closes when spool mechanism moved axially inside the valve bore.

SR flip flop: SR flip-flop is a gated set-reset flip-flop. The S and R inputs control the state of the flip-flop when the clock pulse goes from LOW to HIGH.

Stall torque: The total torque from a motor that output rotational speed is zero.

Static seal: They are the type of seals which the mating gland parts are moving relative to each other.

Stiction: This is the total friction force to prevent the relative motion of the contacting surfaces.

Screw compressor: In screw types of compressors, there are screws inside the casing that pressurize the air by rotating. Screws are attached to each other to obtain a Archimedes screw system.

Stop tube: They ar ethe tubes in hydraulic cylinders that stop the flowing hydraulic fluids into the cylinders So, they are very common in the hydraulic systems.

Streamline flow: They are the streamlines that each layers of fluid flow that follows. They ar eth etheoric lines that shows the layers of a fluid flow.

Swash plate: In eccentrical pumps in hydraulic systems, the plave thet connecting rods of pistons are attached.

Synchronisation of actuators: In control systems that have multiple actuators, synchronization and optimizition of them to obtain the required motion or activation results.

Synthetic fluids: They are the fluids that produced or manufactured in innatural ways.

System: The total thing that different sub-systems to come together to obtain a general result or purpose.

Static analysis: Engineering analyses of static systems such as bridges or buildings.

Steel: Iron-carbın alloys that contain carbon element between 0.1-2.11% in weight. They are very hard and toıugh structural materials that we can apply different machining operations. Also, with the addition of chromium in certain percentages, we obtain stainless steel.
