When you find principal stresses in stress analysis, you will sort these stress values from bigger to smaller values. σ1 will be the greatest value, σ2 is the middle value and σ3 is the smallest principal stress value. And also it is very easy to find corresponding principal strain values by using the elasticity modulus of the material.
