Maximum shear stresses can be calculated by hand for specific cross-sections in theoretical mechanics. But you can build the finite element analysis model of your physical system in ANSYS® also. And ANSYS® provides solution tools to see maximum shear stress results.
Here, we will show you the general information about maximum shear stress and how to see the maximum shear stress in ANSYS® structural analyses.

What Is The Maximum Shear Stress?
In classical mechanics, we explained how to find principal stress values both in hand calculation and ANSYS® analyses. And you need to understand the theory behind the principal stress values to understand how to find maximum shear stresses in ANSYS® Mechanical analyses.
The formulation to calculate maximum shear stress in classical mechanics is like this;

Here, σ1 is the biggest principal stress value and σ3 is the lowest principal stress value. The maximum shear stress values are calculated with this equation.
Also, Mohr’s Circle can be used to find maximum shear stress value by placing the stress values on the circle properly.
How To See Maximum Shear Stress In ANSYS® Mechanical?

If you built all the FEA systems in ANSYS® Mechanical by defining all the required boundary conditions and creating mesh structures, you can see the maximum shear stress result.
To do it, just right-click on the ‘Solution’ tab then hover your mouse on the ‘Insert’ tab. And select the ‘Maximum Shear’ option from the ‘Stress’ menu as shown above.

After selecting it, click on the ‘Solve’ button to see the maximum shear result in ANSYS® Mechanical.

The maximum shear result is shown as you see above. You can use probes and other contour options to see the results in different ways.
Conclusion
As you see above, the logic of maximum shear stress and seeing maximum shear stress results in ANSYS® Mechanical analyses is very simple.
