Molecular Weight And Degree Of Polymerization Terms In Polymer Chemistry

In polymer chemistry, there are some kinds of technical terms used to define or explain different polymer materials. But first, you need to understand, what is polymer in material technique from this article. Two of terms are very imporant in polymer chemistry; Molecular weigth(MW) of polymer and degree of polymerization(DP) of polymer. In this article, we explained these terms briefly.

Illustration of polymer molecules.

What Is Degree Of Polymerization?

Macromolecule chains that are produced with polymerization processes have ‘n’ repeating units. These units are same with each other, and these same units constitutes macromolecule chains of polymers. The of ‘n’ is called as ‘degree of polymerization(DP)’ of that polymer. Material properties of polymers changes according to degree of polymerization. Higher degree of polymerization provides more mechanical strength in solid state of polymers, but in liquid state, viscosity increases which makes the processing of polymer more difficult. So degree of polymerizations of different polymers adjusted according to this basis.

What Is Molecular Weight(MW) Of Polymers?

DP And MW values of some polymers(Fundamentals of modern manufacturing)

As we stated in an another content that link is given above, mers constitues the polymers. Molecular weigth of polymers are calculated with molecular weigths of these mers. And molecular weigth of mers are multiplied with degree of polymerization ‘n’ gives the molecular weigth of whole polymer structure.
