For positioning, coordinate systems are used in CAD software and these coordinate systems have a general rule. Here we explain this rule which is also called a right-hand rule. 

What Is The Right-Hand Rule?

The right-hand rule is used for general coordinate systems. The cartesian coordinate system is the most common coordinate system type that the right-hand rule is applied. CAD programs are generally used cartesian coordinate systems for positioning. 

According to the right-hand rule; 

  • When you align your right thumb to the positive X-axis direction, 
  • The index finger shows the positive Y-axis direction. 
  • If the other fingers are curled 90 degrees according to the index finger, they show the positive Z-axis direction. 

Rotations are also very important and rotations are defined according to the X, Y, and Z axes. According to the right-hand rule, if the thumb is directed along the positive side of an axis, the positive direction of rotation is shown by the other finger’s curl.
