As you understand from its name that superalloys has very unique properties compared with other conventional alloys. As you know that alloys contain two or more constituent metals inside them. The difference of superalloys is, they includes three or more constituent metals inside them. In this article, we will explain the unique properties and differences of superalloys below.

What Is Superalloy And What Are The Properties Of Superalloys?
Actually superalloys has not distinctive properties at room temperature, compared with other conventional alloys. Superalloys’ distinctive properties are prominent at high temperatures. At higher operating temperatures, superalloys show very good mechanical properties such as strength and resistance to surface degradation(corrosionand oxidation). Even at around 1100 celsius degrees, these superalloys show very good mechanical properties.
But the production tonnage of superalloys are not high as conventional alloys. Actually, the production rates of superalloys can be negligible compared with other conventional alloys. Because of that, superalloys are very expensive and precious.
If we take a look at the applications of superalloys, systems in which operating efficiency increases with higher temperatures. Gas turbines, steam turbines, jet and rocket engines and nuclear power plants.
What Are The Types Of Superalloys?
Superalloys can ve classified according to their primary constituents which has three categories;
- Iron-based Superalloys: The primary constituent of these superalloys is Iron. Iron generally has the proportion of 50% in these superalloys.
- Nickel-based Superalloys: This is the most renowned superalloy type. The primary constituent in thesea superalloys is Nickel. Nickel-based superalloys has the best high temperature mechanical properties around other superalloy types. The principal alloying elements of Nickel-based superalloys are Chromium and Cobalt. Aluminum, titanium, -Molybdenum, Niobium (Nb), and Iron can added as very small amounts. The most known materials that this group of superalloys include Inconel, Hastelloy, and Rene41.
- Cobalt-based Superalloys: Cobalt and Chromium are the main constituent elements of Cobalt-based superalloys. Precentage of Cobalt is the highest(around 40%), and because of that, this group is called as Cobalt-based superalloys.
